Workplace Accommodations & Customized Employment
“Customizing employment is more inclusive. It provides adults with disabilities options beyond day programs and sheltered workshops—settings that are often not engaging and which do not meet their individual needs,” said Jodi Newmark, Director of Encompass, a Jewish Child & Family Services program that creates partnerships with existing providers to help adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities (I/DD) lead more satisfying lives through friendships, events, activities and employment.
Customized employment is a way to match the strengths, conditions and interests of a job candidate and the identified business needs of an employer. Three ways that jobs can be customized are task reassignment, job carving and job sharing. A task might be assigned to another employee if a new hire with a disability is unable to perform it; a job description might be changed, or “carved,” to suit the individual abilities of an employee with a disability, or a job might be split into parts shared by two or more employees.
